Dear Brothers,

There has been much talk about President Barack Obama speaking to school children across the country today. I applaud and salute the efforts of the president and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan for addressing our kids. This is what is expected of our nation’s leader.

For more than 70 years, the president of the United States has on occasion reached out to our children on issues and matters pertaining to their education and development. Every president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt has addressed the school-aged population.

The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. encourage this continued dialogue and commitment from the White House to address the educational needs of our students. Further, we applaud his comments to students to be mindful and careful as to what they place on social media networks, such as Face Book.

While Face Book is a magnificent engine used for social networking, educational and career connections, practicing 21st century democracy, (I used it extensively during my campaign for general president), at times inappropriate material can find its way there, and in some cases put young children at risk of danger.

I encourage our brothers to heed the president’s advice and be mindful of what you post. As our young college brothers prepare to enter and move into the work force and other avenues, we want to be certain that every brother of Alpha is well represented.

Let them see your commitment to community service as you carry out the aims of this fraternity and as we move our boys "from the high chair to higher education."

Fraternally,

Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr.

General President
