As the leaves change colors and the crisp cool fall days
are upon us, I want to take a few minutes to greet you and to share a few
updates. By now you have been accustomed to receiving our internal fraternal
communications. It has been the desire of this administration to keep you
well informed consistently and constantly. We are in the final stages of producing the fall edition
of The Sphinx. I am excited about
this issue as it will be our first presented initially electronically in our
efforts to preserve paper and support our “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Goes
Green Initiative.” A limited number of printed copies will be available and
the General Office will provide additional details on this at a later date.
Our plan is to ensure that our senior brothers and those financially active
members without Internet access will get a copy of the magazine. We are also
planning a robust Sphinx advertising
campaign that will help us reduce our “out-of-pocket” costs and allow us to
finally put The Sphinx back on a
quarterly, four-times-a-year publication schedule. Let me thank the chapters and individual brothers who
donated to the two organizations working to prevent and educate the public on
domestic violence. I would also like to congratulate the many chapters across
the country who engaged in some type of domestic violence awareness seminar
or lecture. Please forward (via e-mail) your (digital) photos and articles to
Brother Rick Blalock, editor of The
Sphinx, at sphinx@apa1906.net. I have just returned from an historic trip to We are on our way! Very soon, we will be forming a
special commission on the King memorial that will help us plan our fraternal
activities, projects and events leading up to the historic dedication of the
memorial in the fall of 2011. We will keep you updated on the progress of the
construction. On Tuesday, throughout the country, you hit the polls to
place a vote for the candidates of your choice. We thank you for exercising a
right that was made possible by so many including many great Alpha men. Of the
many elected were two of our own brothers including Brother A.C. Wharton,
elected mayor of Please, frequent the fraternity’s Web site periodically
for updates on activities and events in the life of YOUR fraternity. Lately, many brothers have been e-mailing about the
fraternity’s ritual on the Wikipedia Web site. We are aware of this and
General Counsel Brother Keith Bishop and Executive Director William Lyle have
been working to get the document removed. Further, a photograph has been
circulating of a white female wearing a t-shirt with the fraternity’s
letter. Brothers, both of these
are prime and unfortunate examples of the carelessness that some of our
brothers have taken in protecting the image and intellectual property of our
fraternity. As I have said often, even the so called “secured yahoo list
groups” are not secure. All it takes is for one brother to take an e-mail
message from the list group and e-mail it to someone and thus we become
further exposed. I again warn you to be very careful about what you post and
share. As we are in the final weeks of the membership intake,
there are still brothers and chapters in violation of the membership intake
process. Let me warn you, this fraternity will take every action possible to
protect itself from those members who are violators of our process. The
regional vice presidents, assistant vice presidents and the general counsel
have been put on notice to move with expeditiously to protect our
organization and its name and brand. We are weeks from the celebration of our 103rd
Founders’ Day and some major announcements which will be made on December 4.
You will be very pleased with these announcements and upcoming projects and
activities of the fraternity. We hope that each chapter is planning an
appropriate observance to celebrate our historic founding. Your board of directors joins me in continuing to work
hard to create meaning and value to the fraternal experience. Have a very
blessed Thanksgiving holiday and give thanks for your family, good health,
friends and dear A PHI A!
