Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. elects
Hyacinth C. Ahuruonye its General Treasurer

New General Treasurer is Helping to Ensure A Bright Fiscal Future for 103 Year Old Organization

SAN FRANCISCO — In 103 years, the world’s oldest and most influential organization of collegiate men of color has never had an African-born member as a national officer - until now.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., put another footnote in the history books on Saturday, July 18, by electing Hyacinth C. Ahuruonye its (national) general treasurer. The nomination and election proceedings were held during the 103rd Anniversary Convention of the fraternity in New Orleans, La., July 15-19.

As the General Treasurer of the fraternity, Ahuruonye is charged with the proper safeguard of all monies, funds and securities of the nonprofit fraternal organization. The fraternity, with more than 200,000 members initiated, has been a leader in the fight for social, political, educational and economic equality since its founding in 1906 in Ithaca, New York, on the Ivy-league campus of Cornell University.

“This is truly an honor,” said Ahuruonye. “To hold a national office in this organization is ground-breaking, forward-looking, yet humbling.”  His four-year term began on July 20th, at his first fraternity Board of Directors meeting in New Orleans.

Ahuruonye, 47, traveled across the country to assist in the fraternities established platform of fiscal transparency, enhanced accountability and capacity-building while in office, in collaboration with staff, volunteers and other board members.

“I plan to work closely with all members of the Board of Directors and our presiding officer, Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr., the general president,” said Ahuruonye. “Together we will be able to build a stronger, more fiscally sound - and most importantly - a more open fraternity, where members are meaningfully informed about their organization’s money and financial condition. A stronger Alpha makes a stronger America; which makes a better world.”

Ahuruonye, (pronounced ah-RUN-yeh) a California-based certified public accountant, is the principal and founder of HCA & Co., one of the nation’s leading management consulting and certified public accountancy firms with a home office in the heart of the San Francisco financial district. In 2002, during the George W. Bush administration, he was invited to the White House to brief the president’s senior staff on the state of the economy and small businesses.

Founded in May 1987, HCA & Co. provides accounting, auditing, tax and management consulting services to broad range of clienteles and industries.
In addition to being a life member of Alpha, Ahuruonye is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Society of Public Accountants, the National Association of Black Accountants and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Born in Nigeria, Ahuruonye is a naturalized U.S. citizen. He joined Alpha Phi Alpha in March of 1985 while a student at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Ala. He earned a baccalaureate degree in Accounting and graduated with great honors in 1987. He and his wife Terri have two children and reside in San Francisco, California.
