Alpha Phi Alpha Goes Green
Fraternity national initiative to coincide with National Day of Service |
| Thousands of members of the nation’s oldest and most-influential Greek-lettered collegiate organization for people of color will go green this month. Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. from across the country will join together as part of President Barack Obama’s United We Serve Campaign, which will kick off the Green the Block National Day of Service on September 11, 2009.
Alpha Brothers and Chapters in the United States and abroad are encouraged to take part in the growing movement to reduce environmental risks in low- to moderate-income communities, help improve energy efficiency, and increase sustainability.
Launched as one of the new initiatives of General President Herman "Skip" Mason, Jr., the plan was put into action by the fraternity at this year’s national convention in New Orleans, the Alpha Goes Green Initiative’s aim is to highlight the capital and moral investments that Alpha Brothers make in their public and private lives toward natural disaster relief efforts, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, weatherization projects, environmental risk reduction, sustainable development, and environmental justice campaigns targeted at ending pollution in and around economically marginalized neighborhoods and making these neighborhoods green and healthy.
“What we wish to convey is our commitment to the land and to the health of our people,” said Brother Dr. Sacoby Wilson, vice chairman of the Alpha Goes Green Initiative Committee. “It’s there, we just have to tell our story.” Sacoby, is an environmental health scientist at the University of South Carolina, and chair-elect of the Environment Section of the American Public Health Association. Committee members include Brothers Mark Barnes, Rutgers University Ph.D. candidate in Geography and Pennsylvania Association of Alpha Chapters’ president and director; DuShawn King, Office of the Mayor, City of Philadelphia; Marc Littlejohn, Diversity Coordinator for the National Wildlife Federation; Jonathan Jones, Director of Fulton County, Ga. Housing Authority; and JaMarcus Brewer, an energy efficiency and renewables engineer). “Black and old gold, of course, our Alpha members colors of choice,” said fraternity General President Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr. noting the fraternity’s official colors since 1906. “But in this one instance, we will say we like the idea of being green too.”
Brothers are asked to document their activities which address environmental issues like the ones described above and others mentioned in the Green the Block toolkit with the aid of video, photography, and brief descriptive stories. Documentation materials from the September 11th day of service and any activities that occur beyond may be sent to Communications Director Bryan Joseph Anthony Kelly at bjakelly@apa1906.net. Materials will be posted on the (soon to come) Alpha Goes Green Web site. You can also learn more about the program in the upcoming issue of The Sphinx. |
